Iranian drones hit Kuwait’s Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery — capacity 730,000 bbl/day — in a second consecutive attack, sparking fresh fires. Israel simultaneously launched new strikes over Tehran as Iranians marked Nowruz. The war, now three weeks old, is showing no signs of ending.

Full Report
Iranian drones struck Kuwait’s largest oil refinery for a second consecutive day on Friday morning, igniting fires across multiple processing units, even as Israeli airstrikes boomed over Tehran as Iranians celebrated Nowruz — the Persian New Year. The war, which began on 28 February 2026, is approaching the end of its third week with no sign of de-escalation.
Kuwait’s Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery, capable of processing around 730,000 barrels of oil per day, was struck in two waves of drone attacks in the early hours of Friday — the same facility that had already taken damage in Iranian strikes the previous day. Kuwait’s national oil company confirmed several units had been shut down, though no casualties were reported. The Kuwaiti military said its air defences were actively intercepting missile and drone threats.
The attacks form part of a broadening Iranian campaign against Gulf Arab energy infrastructure, launched in direct retaliation for Israel’s strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field — the country’s largest, supplying roughly 80% of its domestic natural gas needs. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that the Gulf strikes represent only a fraction of Iran’s capabilities, threatening zero restraint if Iranian energy sites are hit again.

“These people expect the war to continue until the enemy is completely exhausted. This war must end when the shadow of war is lifted from the country.” — Gen. Ali Mohammad Naeini, IRGC spokesman, hours before being killed in an airstrike on 20 March 2026 |
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also confirmed it struck US forces at the UAE’s Al-Dhafra airbase and fired missiles at sites inside Israel. The UAE reported incoming missile and drone threats — heavy explosions shook Dubai as air defences intercepted fire over the city, where residents were observing Eid al-Fitr. Bahrain reported shrapnel from an intercepted projectile sparked a warehouse fire. Saudi Arabia shot down more than a dozen drones targeting its oil-rich Eastern Province within two hours.
Meanwhile, in Tehran, explosions rang out as Israel launched new strikes over the capital — even as millions of Iranians gathered to celebrate Nowruz. The Israeli army later confirmed it struck targets east of Tehran and also broadened its campaign to Syria, hitting infrastructure linked to attacks on the Druze minority population in the southern Suwayda province.
Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei — who has not been seen publicly since succeeding his slain father — issued a rare statement Friday saying Iran’s enemies need to have their “security” taken away. Iran’s top military spokesman separately warned that “parks, recreational areas and tourist destinations worldwide” would no longer be safe for Iran’s enemies — a signal that Tehran or its proxies may consider expanding the conflict beyond the Middle East.
US President Donald Trump and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu publicly diverged this week over Israel’s bombing of South Pars. Trump posted on Truth Social claiming the US “knew nothing” about the strike in advance. Netanyahu said Israel acted alone and agreed to hold off on future energy infrastructure attacks at Trump’s request — even as Israeli jets launched new strikes on Tehran hours later.
Iran’s intelligence minister Esmail Khatib, his wife and daughter were killed in a strike this week. Funeral processions were held in Tehran on Friday. Earlier this week, Israel also claimed the killing of Ali Larijani — Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and a senior figure in Iran’s wartime leadership structure.
With little reliable information emerging from Iran, the true extent of damage to its nuclear facilities, weapons production capacity, and energy infrastructure remains unclear. But Iran has demonstrated it retains the capability to choke Gulf oil flows and inflict meaningful economic disruption — with Brent crude having touched $117 per barrel in recent days before easing back to $102.

🇮🇳 India Angle — What This War Means for Indian Markets
Oil Imports: India imports ~85% of its crude oil needs, with significant volumes routed through the Strait of Hormuz — now largely paralysed. A sustained closure would drive Brent crude sharply higher, worsening India’s trade deficit and fuelling inflation. Trade Disruption: Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has said trade remains steady, but exporters are seeking a 6-month loan moratorium as $66 billion in West Asia trade faces disruption. LPG prices have spiked from ₹1,600 to ₹4,000 per cylinder amid shortages. Upstream Oil Stocks: ONGC, GAIL, and Reliance Industries are expected to benefit from sustained higher oil prices. JPMorgan notes oil prices for FY27 are likely to track above mid-February forecasts in most geopolitical scenarios. FII Outflows: Uncertainty is keeping foreign institutional investors cautious — net outflows of nearly ₹70,000 Cr this month. However, domestic markets are holding up, with DIIs buying ₹5,225 Cr on 18 March. Nifty, now 10% off recent highs, offers a value entry point for long-term investors. Sectors to Watch: Upstream oil (ONGC, GAIL, Reliance) — positive on higher crude. OMC stocks (BPCL, IOC, HPCL) — under pressure due to refining margin squeeze. Auto — potential fuel price hike risk. Gold / defence — safe haven demand elevated. |
