NIFTY SLIPS BELOW 22,650; SENSEX TUMBLES 429 POINTS AS RBI HIKES RATE
Indian equity benchmarks snapped their two-day winning streak on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, with the Nifty 50 slipping below the 22,650 mark and the Sensex falling over 429 points after the RBI's hawkish policy stance and a surge in crude oil prices weighed on sentiment.
The Nifty settled at 22,603.05, declining 173.05 points or 0.76%, while the BSE Sensex ended 429.11 points, or 0.59%, lower at 72,638.70.
The market opened weak and remained under pressure through the session, with rate-sensitive sectors bearing the brunt of the sell-off.
🔑 Key Driver: RBI raised the repo rate by 25 bps to 5.50% and shifted its stance to 'calibrated tightening' from 'neutral'. This hawkish surprise, combined with a rebound in Brent crude to ~$101.5/barrel, triggered broad-based selling.
Sector Losers: Metal, realty, auto and FMCG stocks saw the sharpest declines. PSU banks and media were the only sectors that managed gains.
METALS, REALTY, AUTO DRAG; PSU BANKS AND MEDIA BUCK THE TREND
Rate-sensitive sectors came under heavy selling pressure following the RBI rate hike. Metal stocks remained under pressure as the dollar index rose, with Hindalco and JSW Steel among the top losers. Realty and auto indices declined up to 2%.
FMCG and IT sectors also saw profit booking. Titan was the top Nifty loser, falling over 3.8%, after its Q2 jewellery business growth came in below estimates.
On the positive side, PSU banks and media stocks bucked the trend. Kotak Mahindra Bank emerged as the top Nifty gainer, rising 1.88%, while BSE and Bharti Airtel also posted gains.
RUPEE SLUMPS TO 5-MONTH LOW; VIX RISES AS RBI SHIFTS STANCE
The rupee slumped 43 paise to close at 96.78 against the US dollar on Wednesday, its weakest closing level in nearly five months, after the RBI raised rates and adopted a hawkish stance. The currency emerged as Asia's worst-performing unit for the day.
India VIX, the volatility gauge, rose 1.98% to 13.88 from the previous close of 13.61, signaling renewed nervousness after the RBI's policy surprise.
FII/DII Flows: FIIs extended their selling streak, offloading equities worth ₹2,961.30 crore on Tuesday. DIIs continued to provide strong support, purchasing ₹5,088.92 crore during the same session. FIIs have sold about ₹17,145 crore in the first three sessions of October.
