NIFTY ENDS BELOW 22,850; SENSEX SHEDS 143 POINTS AS EARLY GAINS FADE
Indian equity benchmarks ended lower for a second consecutive session on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, with the Nifty 50 slipping below the 22,850 mark and the Sensex declining over 143 points, as a sharp reversal from early gains wiped out nearly 1,300 points from the Sensex's intraday high amid elevated crude oil prices and profit booking in banking and auto stocks.
The Nifty settled at 22,811.35, declining 77.60 points or 0.34%, while the BSE Sensex ended 143.21 points, or 0.19%, lower at 73,709.69 [citation:2][citation:6].
The selloff wiped out nearly ₹6.7 lakh crore in investor wealth, with the total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies falling sharply. The Nifty touched an intraday high of 23,120.90 before retreating nearly 460 points to a low of 22,649.90 [citation:7].
🔑 Key Driver: Elevated crude oil prices above $110/barrel amid escalating Middle East tensions, firm US Treasury yields, profit booking after early gains, and weak Q2 earnings from several companies triggered the decline [citation:3][citation:4].
Sector Losers: Auto, metal and consumer durables were the worst performers, each declining around 2%. IT was the lone bright spot, surging 2.88% on strong earnings momentum [citation:8].
IT STOCKS SHINE; AUTO, METAL, CONSUMER DURABLES DRAG; PSU BANKS MIXED
The IT sector emerged as the standout performer, with the Nifty IT index surging 2.88% to 32,422.50. Tech Mahindra (+8.48%), TCS (+4.89%) and Infosys (+4.61%) led the gains, extending their strong Q2 earnings momentum [citation:8].
On the losing side, auto stocks slumped around 2%, with Trent and Eicher Motors falling 2% each. Metal and consumer durables indices also declined 1.7-2%. Bajaj Finance, Eternal and BSE Ltd were among the top Nifty losers [citation:1][citation:8].
PSU banks showed mixed trends after their strong run on Monday. While SBI gained 1.15%, some profit booking emerged in PNB and Union Bank after their sharp rallies [citation:8].
RUPEE SURGES TO 6-WEEK HIGH ON JIO IPO FLOWS; VIX SPIKES 9% TO 4-MONTH HIGH
The Indian rupee strengthened sharply, closing 48 paise higher at 94.43 against the US dollar, its strongest level since early September. The currency was supported by foreign portfolio inflows linked to Jio Platforms' $3.2 billion IPO, which was fully subscribed in less than two hours, and RBI intervention to contain dollar demand [citation:4][citation:10].
India VIX, the volatility gauge, surged 9.14% to 16.12, its highest level in four months, reflecting heightened nervousness as the market reversed its early gains and crude oil prices spiked [citation:3][citation:14].
FII/DII Flows: Foreign institutional investors sold shares worth ₹1,148.64 crore on Monday, while domestic institutional investors bought equities worth ₹3,201.19 crore. FPIs have sold shares worth ₹52,007.92 crore in October through October 19 [citation:5].
