NIFTY SLIPS BELOW 22,650; SENSEX FALLS 252 POINTS AS PHARMA DRAGS, IT SHINES
Indian equity benchmarks ended lower in a volatile session on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, with the Nifty 50 slipping below the 22,650 mark and the Sensex declining over 250 points, as profit booking, elevated crude oil prices, and persistent foreign fund outflows weighed on sentiment following the previous session's sharp rally.
The Nifty settled at 22,622.70, declining 99.25 points or 0.44%, while the BSE Sensex ended 251.89 points, or 0.34%, lower at 72,781.89 [citation:1][citation:12].
The market witnessed a muted first half before coming under pressure in the afternoon session, with the Nifty touching a day's low of 22,558.95. However, some buying in IT and FMCG names helped trim losses [citation:1].
🔑 Key Driver: Profit booking after Tuesday's sharp rally, elevated crude oil prices amid Middle East tensions, persistent FII outflows, and investor caution ahead of key US inflation data triggered the decline.
Sector Losers: Pharma and healthcare stocks were the biggest laggards, with Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare registering the sharpest declines. On the positive side, IT stocks provided strong support, with Nifty IT ending as the top sectoral gainer [citation:1].
IT CONTINUES RALLY; PHARMA, HEALTHCARE WORST HIT; FMCG PROVIDES SUPPORT
The IT sector continued its strong performance for the second consecutive session, with Nifty IT advancing 1.33% to 30,226. Infosys led the gainers, rising 2.24%, followed by Wipro (+1.78%) and LTM (+1.73%). Seven out of ten index constituents ended in the green [citation:2].
The rally in IT stocks came on the back of strong Q2 earnings momentum. Nifty IT has gained around 9% in the last five sessions, driven by healthy earnings performance from TCS and HCL Tech, with AI operations contributing significantly to revenues [citation:18].
On the losing side, pharma and healthcare stocks bore the brunt of the selloff. FMCG stocks also provided some support, with Nestle India emerging as the top Nifty gainer, rising 3.69%. Tata Consumer Products gained 2.91% [citation:5].
RUPEE EXTENDS GAINS TO 95.17; VIX RISES 3.40% AS CAUTION BUILDS
The Indian rupee appreciated 19 paise to close at 95.17 against the US dollar on Wednesday, registering its fourth straight session of gains. The currency was supported by the Reserve Bank of India's interventions designed to ease near-term dollar demand and limit speculative foreign exchange exposure [citation:15][citation:20].
India VIX, the volatility gauge, rose 3.40% to 14.64 from the previous close of 14.12, as investor caution built ahead of key US inflation data. The index moved between an intraday low of 13.79 and a high of 15.01 [citation:8].
FII/DII Flows: Foreign portfolio investors have pulled out ₹3.08 trillion from Indian equities in CY26. However, domestic institutional investors have continued to buy, with net investment reaching ₹6.83 trillion in CY26. On Tuesday, FIIs turned net buyers, purchasing equities worth ₹2,000.73 crore.
