🇮🇳 STORY 03 · RUPEE WEAKENS TO 94.90 ON DOLLAR STRENGTH
The rupee weakened 16 paise to close at 94.90 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday, as the dollar climbed to its highest level in more than a year amid rising expectations of US Federal Reserve rate hikes and increased safe-haven demand .
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 94.89 and touched an intraday low of 94.93 . The dollar index extended its rally to 101.44, its highest level since May last year, as investors sought safety following a sell-off in technology stocks .
Despite a sharp decline in global oil prices, the rupee remained under pressure. Currency traders said oil prices are no longer the primary factor influencing the rupee's movement .
