NIFTY RECLAIMS 22,700; SENSEX JUMPS 1,109 POINTS AS IT STOCKS RALLY
Indian equity benchmarks staged a sharp recovery on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, with the Nifty 50 reclaiming the 22,700 mark and the Sensex surging over 1,100 points, as a rally in information technology stocks following HCL Technologies' strong quarterly earnings lifted investor sentiment.
The Nifty settled at 22,721.95, gaining 358.60 points or 1.60%, while the BSE Sensex ended 1,109.10 points, or 1.54%, higher at 73,033.78.
The recovery added nearly ₹4.3 lakh crore to the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies, providing major relief to investors after Monday's sharp decline.
🔑 Key Driver: Strong Q2 earnings from HCL Technologies, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's positive comments on LTCG tax and STT, easing crude oil prices, and RBI's measures to support the rupee triggered the broad-based rally.
Sector Gainers: Nifty IT was the standout performer, surging 5.22%. Realty, PSU Bank, FMCG, Auto, and Metal indices gained 1-2%. Pharma was the only sector to close marginally lower.
IT STOCKS LEAD RALLY; REALTY, PSU BANKS, FMCG FOLLOW; PHARMA LAGS
The IT sector emerged as the strongest performer on Tuesday, with the Nifty IT index surging over 5.22%, led by HCL Technologies (+8.42%), TCS (+6.79%), and Tech Mahindra. The rally came after HCL Tech reported strong Q2 earnings with a 21% rise in net profit and raised its FY27 revenue guidance.
Broader market participation was strong, with 46 out of 50 Nifty constituents ending in the green. Nifty Realty rose 2.48%, PSU Bank gained 1.46%, FMCG advanced 1.40%, Auto rose 1.23%, and Metal added 1.17%.
On the losing side, Nifty Pharma was the only sectoral laggard, closing marginally lower. Kotak Mahindra Bank, Eternal, and Maruti Suzuki were among the top Nifty losers.
RUPEE STRENGTHENS TO 95.36; VIX CRASHES 7.41% AS FEAR SUBSIDES
The Indian rupee strengthened 42 paise to close at 95.36 against the US dollar on Tuesday, supported by the Reserve Bank of India's measures aimed at reducing spot dollar demand and curbing excessive positioning in the foreign exchange market.
India VIX, the volatility gauge, crashed 7.41% to 14.04 from the previous close of 15.25, signaling a sharp easing of near-term panic after Monday's sell-off.
FII/DII Flows: Foreign portfolio investors have pulled out ₹3.08 trillion from Indian equities in CY26. However, domestic institutional investors have continued to buy, with net investment reaching ₹6.83 trillion in CY26, compared with ₹7.88 trillion in CY25 and ₹5.26 trillion in CY24.
