📌 STORY 01 · OIL SLIPS, MARKETS RANGEBOUND ON CEASEFIRE TALKS
🔻 Tuesday's Session: Nifty closes below 24,200; Sensex falls 238 points
Indian equity benchmarks ended with minor losses on Tuesday as investor sentiment remained cautious amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict, while auto, realty and metal shares advanced but PSU bank, IT and oil & gas stocks weighed on sentiment.
The Nifty 50 settled at 24,187.70, falling 50.80 points, or 0.21%, while the Sensex declined 238.41 points, or 0.31%, to close at 77,470.11.
🔵 Key Drivers: Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank emerged as the top losers on the Nifty, putting pressure on the benchmark indices. HDFC Bank tumbled nearly 5% on Monday in the wake of its quarterly results. However, crude oil prices retreated on Tuesday after reports emerged that the United States and Iran were exploring a new ceasefire, with Brent crude trading at $88.17 per barrel, easing fears of an immediate supply disruption.
✅ Selective strength: Nifty Midcap outperformed; Auto, realty and metal shares advanced; Market breadth positive with 2,194 advances vs 2,015 declines.
🏦 STORY 02 · BANKING PACK MIXED ON EARNINGS REACTION
The Nifty Bank index slipped 110 points to 57,835 on Tuesday, as weakness in HDFC Bank, SBI and Bank of Baroda offset gains elsewhere.
HDFC Bank and Axis Bank ended with losses of over 5% each on Monday in reaction to their Q1 earnings, while ICICI Bank stock advanced over 1% as investors digested the results. "Among the private banks that reported results over the weekend, except for ICICI Bank, most others saw softer net interest margins (NIMs) and lower provisions, due to which profits looked higher," said Narendra Solanki, head of fundamental research at Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers.
⚠️ Outlook: Margin compression a key factor; ICICI Bank delivered strong double-digit growth across advances, deposits, NII and PAT.
🇮🇳 STORY 03 · RUPEE OPENS HIGHER DESPITE OIL UNCERTAINTY
The Indian rupee opened 4 paise higher at 96.41 against the US dollar on Tuesday, even as elevated crude oil prices and a bearish shift in derivatives market positioning continued to underpin demand for the greenback.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remained net sellers, offloading equities worth ₹1,121 crore in the previous session. The continued outflows, coupled with elevated crude oil prices and a firm US dollar, have added to the pressure on the domestic currency.
