NIFTY HITS FRESH 52-WEEK LOW; SENSEX CRASHES 1,045 POINTS AS ₹10 LAKH CRORE WIPED OUT
Indian equity benchmarks crashed on Thursday, October 8, 2026, with the Nifty 50 hitting a fresh 52-week low of 22,179.90 before closing at 22,231.80, down 371.25 points or 1.64%. The BSE Sensex plunged over 1,045 points, or 1.44%, to close at 71,593.24.
The selloff wiped out nearly ₹10 lakh crore in investor wealth, with the total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies falling to ₹4,60,97,838 crore. Market breadth remained extremely weak, with 660 stocks advancing against 2,950 declining on the NSE.
🔑 Key Driver: The RBI's hawkish shift to 'calibrated tightening' with a 25 bps repo rate hike to 5.50%, a sharp rise in bond yields, elevated crude oil prices amid Middle East tensions, continued foreign fund outflows, and weak global cues triggered the broad-based selloff.
Sector Losers: Nifty Metal was the worst performer, declining 3.55%. Realty, Auto, Oil & Gas, FMCG, and Media indices fell 2-3%. IT was the only sector showing resilience.
ALL SECTORS IN RED; METALS, REALTY, AUTO WORST HIT; IT SHOWS RESILIENCE
Every major sectoral index ended in the red on Thursday, with cyclical and rate-sensitive sectors bearing the brunt of the selloff. Nifty Metal was the worst performer, falling 3.55%, led by JSW Steel (-4.5%), Vedanta (-3.2%), and Tata Steel. Adani Enterprises was the biggest Nifty 50 loser, dropping 5.36%.
Auto stocks fell around 2%, with Tata Motors, M&M, Maruti Suzuki, and Bajaj Auto under pressure. Realty declined sharply, with DLF, Godrej Properties, and Prestige Estates facing selling pressure. FMCG stocks also fell, with ITC dropping 4.24% and HUL declining 1.44%.
On the positive side, IT stocks were among the few showing resilience. Infosys gained 0.58%, Tech Mahindra rose 0.43%, and HCL Tech edged up 0.11%.
RUPEE NEAR RECORD LOW; VIX SURGES 9.66% AS PANIC GRIPS MARKET
The rupee remained under severe pressure, trading near its record low of 96.78 against the US dollar. The currency has been battered by persistent foreign fund outflows, a strong dollar index, and elevated crude oil prices.
India VIX, the volatility gauge, surged 9.66% to 15.23, signalling heightened fear and uncertainty in the market.
FII/DII Flows: FIIs remained heavy sellers on Wednesday, offloading equities worth over ₹6,121 crore. DIIs provided some support, making net purchases of around ₹4,596 crore. FIIs have sold shares worth ₹25,976 crore in October so far.
