NIFTY RECLAIMS 23,000; SENSEX SURGES 1,534 POINTS AS IT, BANKS LEAD MASSIVE RALLY
Indian equity benchmarks staged a massive relief rally on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with the Nifty 50 surging nearly 375 points to reclaim the 22,950 mark and the Sensex skyrocketing over 1,530 points, driven by a sharp rebound in IT, auto, and private banking heavyweights as a global sell-off in AI-linked stocks improved India's relative appeal.
The Nifty settled at 22,997.35, gaining 374.65 points or 1.66%, while the BSE Sensex ended 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, higher at 74,315.61 [citation:9][citation:15].
The rally added significant wealth to investors as buying emerged across sectors, with 41 out of 50 Nifty constituents ending in the green [citation:4]. The Nifty touched an intraday high of 23,056.40 before closing near the 23,000 mark [citation:4].
🔑 Key Driver: Strong Q2 earnings from IT majors, Jio Platforms' RHP filing for its mega IPO, easing crude oil prices, a firmer rupee, and a global correction in AI-linked stocks that improved India's relative appeal triggered the broad-based rally [citation:8].
Sector Gainers: Nifty IT was the standout performer, surging over 4%. Auto, private banks, and realty indices gained 2-3%. Metal and PSU Bank indices were the only laggards.
IT STOCKS LEAD RALLY; AUTO, BANKS, RELIANCE FOLLOW; METALS LAG
The IT sector emerged as the strongest performer on Thursday, extending its rally for the third consecutive session. Tech Mahindra (+4.75%) and ICICI Bank (+3.80%) led the Nifty gainers, followed by Reliance Industries (+3.44%) [citation:4].
The rally in IT stocks came on the back of strong Q2 earnings momentum from TCS and HCL Tech, with AI operations contributing significantly to revenues. The global correction in AI-linked equities also worked in India's favour, as FIIs who had been selling Indian stocks to buy AI shares may halt that trend [citation:8].
Reliance Industries surged following Jio Platforms' filing of its Red Herring Prospectus for its mega IPO. The issue will open on October 21 and close on October 23, with a price band of ₹1,065–₹1,119 per share, expecting to raise up to ₹30,213 crore [citation:8].
On the losing side, Nestle India crashed 7.76% despite reporting strong Q2 earnings, as investors booked profits. Adani Enterprises and Trent were the other major laggards [citation:4].
RUPEE HITS 4-WEEK HIGH; VIX CRASHES 4.58% AS FEAR SUBSIDES
The Indian rupee strengthened for the fourth straight session, ending 0.1% higher at 95.06 against the US dollar, its highest level in four weeks. The currency was supported by a broadly weaker dollar, lower oil prices, a surge in stocks, and likely central bank intervention [citation:3][citation:11].
India VIX, the volatility gauge, crashed 4.58% to 13.96 from the previous close of 14.63, signaling a sharp easing of near-term fear after the massive rally [citation:2].
FII/DII Flows: Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers on Wednesday, offloading equities worth approximately ₹1,857 crore. However, domestic institutional investors provided strong support with net purchases of around ₹2,670 crore [citation:5][citation:12]. Over the past seven trading sessions, FIIs have sold over ₹8,400 crore, while DIIs have bought nearly ₹12,900 crore [citation:19].
