📆 05 NOV 2026 · CLOSING BELLSensex rockets 2,009 points, Nifty reclaims 24,500 for a sixth straight gain
Indian markets had a blockbuster day on Thursday, 5 November 2026. Sensex closed at 79,310.01, up 2,008.61 points (2.60%) and Nifty 50 closed at 24,536.60, up 576 points (2.40%), the sixth straight day of gains. Nifty opened at 24,378.05, ranged between 24,296.30 and 24,579.90, and finished near the top.
The jump followed the US midterm result, where Democrats won both chambers of Congress. That lifted global risk appetite, weakened the dollar, and pushed crude oil down to a two-month low. Investors also moved money away from AI-linked trades. Both indices have gained more than 8% in six sessions.
Breadth was strong: on the NSE, 2,547 stocks rose against 1,084 that fell, and 39 of the 50 Nifty stocks advanced. Nifty Midcap 100 rose 1.87% and Smallcap 100 rose 0.56%, so large caps led this time. Year to date, Nifty is still down about 6.2%.
Auto, financials and banks lead; energy and media slip
14 of the 16 sectors closed higher. Nifty Capital Market (+4.24%), Nifty Auto (+4.14%) and Nifty Financial Services (+3.99%) led. Banks, private banks, PSU banks and realty gained about 3% each, and IT and consumer durables rose more than 2%.
Only two sectors fell. Nifty Energy slipped 0.3% and Nifty Media fell 0.8%, after a jump of more than 5% on Wednesday. Cheaper crude hurt oil producers like ONGC and Oil India but helped IndiGo and Asian Paints.
Some sector moves are reported as approximate (about +3%, over +2%) in the sources I found. Midcap and smallcap figures also differ between reports (Midcap +1.4% to +1.87%, Smallcap +0.56% to +1.1%). This page uses the figures that match the index levels.
Bajaj Finance, Shriram Finance and M&M lead gainers; Apollo Hospitals, ONGC and NTPC slip
Bajaj Finance jumped 7.65% to ₹1,070. Shriram Finance gained 6.08%, M&M 5.59%, Maruti Suzuki 5.48% and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles 5.46%. IndiGo (+5.43%), ICICI Bank (+5.33%), BSE Ltd (+5.23%) and Asian Paints (+4.36%) also did well. ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Bajaj Finance added the most points to the Nifty.
Apollo Hospitals fell 2.66%, ONGC fell 2.13% and NTPC fell 1.63%. Bharti Airtel was the biggest drag on the index by points.
Outside the Nifty 50, UNO Minda rose about 11.5% and Ashok Leyland about 10.5%. PI Industries fell about 19% to ₹1,770.
▲ Top gainers (Nifty 50)
▼ Top losers (Nifty 50)
Shriram Finance is shown as ₹964; reports gave ₹964.00 and ₹964.55.
Rupee gains 16 paise to 94.48; FIIs bought ₹7,284 crore on Wednesday; Brent near $93–96
The rupee closed at 94.475 per dollar, up about 16 paise from Wednesday's 94.64, its fifth straight gain and the best close in two weeks. A weaker dollar, falling crude and foreign buying helped.
FIIs bought ₹7,284.03 crore of shares on Wednesday, their fourth session of buying in a row and a very large single-day purchase. DIIs sold ₹3,712.23 crore for the fourth day running. Thursday's flows were not yet published in the reports I found.
India VIX, the fear gauge, closed Wednesday at 15.18, down 3.44%. I could not find Thursday's closing level.
Brent crude fell 8.7% on Wednesday to a two-month low. On Thursday it traded around $93.50–96 a barrel, depending on the report. Global shares were mostly higher after the US election result.
Nifty resistance 24,500–24,700; support 24,000–24,200
Nifty opened at 24,378.05, touched a high of 24,579.90 and a low of 24,296.30, then closed at 24,536.60, inside the 24,500–24,700 resistance zone that analysts flagged in the morning. After an 8% rise in six sessions, profit-booking is possible. A fall would likely find support at 24,000–24,200, and Nifty is also above its 200-day average near 23,904.
Crude, FII flows, US politics and profit-booking
Sensex rockets 2,009 points and Nifty reclaims 24,500 as the rally reaches a sixth day
A weaker dollar, crude at a two-month low and heavy foreign buying powered a broad rally. Autos, financials and banks led and 14 of 16 sectors rose. After a gain of more than 8% in six sessions, Nifty is now inside a resistance zone, so some profit-booking would not be a surprise.
✅ Positives
- Sixth straight day of gains, more than 8% in total
- 2,547 advances against 1,084 declines on the NSE
- FIIs bought ₹7,284 crore on Wednesday
- Rupee at its best close in two weeks
- Brent at a two-month low
⚠️ Watch out
- Nifty is in the 24,500–24,700 resistance zone
- DIIs sold ₹3,712 crore for a fourth straight day
- Energy and media fell; PI Industries dropped about 19%
- Midcaps and smallcaps lagged large caps
🎯 What's next: Resistance is at 24,500–24,700 and support at 24,000–24,200. A close above 24,700 would extend the rally, while a slide below 24,200 would show profit-booking. Watch crude prices, FII flows and the US dollar.
