📌 STORY 01 · MARKET RECOVERY & SECTOR ACTION
NIFTY RECLAIMS 22,550; SENSEX JUMPS 473 POINTS AS CRUDE EASES, FED FEARS RECEDE
Indian equity benchmarks snapped their four-day losing streak on Monday, October 5, 2026, with the Nifty 50 reclaiming the 22,550 mark. The Nifty settled at 22,555.75, gaining 133.80 points or 0.60%, while the BSE Sensex ended 472.77 points, or 0.66%, higher at 72,382.47.[citation:1][citation:2]
The market opened strong with the Nifty touching an intraday high of 22,621.80, but mid-session profit booking dragged it to a low of 22,397.10. The benchmark staged a sharp recovery in the second half, closing comfortably above 22,500.[citation:12][citation:20]
Key Driver: Softer-than-expected US jobs data reduced fears of an immediate Fed rate hike, lifting global risk appetite. Easing crude oil prices also provided relief.[citation:11][citation:16]
Sector Gainers: FMCG surged 1.80%, Consumer Durables, Media, Infra, Oil & Gas, PSU Bank, Telecom and Realty gained 0.5–2%. Pharma was the only major laggard, down 0.74%.[citation:12]
📈 STORY 02 · SECTOR PERFORMANCE & GLOBAL CUES
FMCG AND CONSUMER DURABLES LEAD; PSU BANKS SURGE; PHARMA DRAGS
The Nifty FMCG index gained 1.80%, emerging as the top sectoral gainer, with ITC surging 5.08% to Rs 268.90. BSE jumped 4.39% and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles rose 3.31%.[citation:12][citation:19]
The Nifty PSU Bank index rose nearly 2%, led by Bank of India, Punjab National Bank and Indian Bank. Bank Nifty closed 0.48% higher at 54,714.10.[citation:6][citation:12]
Global Cues: Brent crude fell to around $101.74–103 per barrel, easing pressure on import-sensitive sectors. US jobs data showed slower-than-expected growth, reducing Fed hike probability.[citation:8][citation:11]
Broader Market: Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices gained 0.5% each, performing in line with benchmarks.[citation:12]
🇮🇳 STORY 03 · RUPEE · VIX · FLOWS
RUPEE RECOVERS ON LOWER OIL; VIX EASES FROM HIGHS AS PANIC SUBSIDES
The rupee opened 10 paise higher at 96.22 against the US dollar, compared with its previous close of 96.32. Softer oil prices and fading Fed hike bets provided relief to the currency.[citation:7][citation:14]
India VIX, the volatility gauge, closed at 14.71, up 1.73% from the previous close of 14.46. The index moved between an intraday low of 13.49 and a high of 15.35, signaling easing panic from last week's sell-off.[citation:4]
FII/DII Flows: FIIs extended their selling streak, offloading equities worth ₹9,484 crore on October 1. Their combined selling over six sessions exceeded ₹43,000 crore. DIIs continued to provide strong support, purchasing over ₹10,000 crore during the same session.[citation:13]
