NIFTY SLIPS BELOW 22,900; SENSEX TANKS 876 POINTS AS BANKS, IT DRAG
Indian equity benchmarks snapped their two-day winning streak on Monday, October 19, 2026, with the Nifty 50 slipping below the 22,900 mark and the Sensex plunging over 876 points, as heavy selling in private banking and information technology stocks weighed on investor sentiment despite a firm start to the session.
The Nifty settled at 22,888.95, declining 257.20 points or 1.11%, while the BSE Sensex ended 876.37 points, or 1.17%, lower at 73,852.90 [citation:1][citation:6].
The selloff wiped out nearly ₹5.5 lakh crore in investor wealth, with the total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies falling sharply. Market breadth remained extremely weak, with 2,925 stocks declining against 1,163 advances on the NSE [citation:2][citation:15].
🔑 Key Driver: Profit booking after last week's sharp rally, Axis Bank's Q2 profit missing estimates, a sell-off in IT stocks after their strong weekly gain, and elevated crude oil prices near $108/barrel triggered the broad-based decline [citation:10][citation:15][citation:17].
Sector Losers: Nifty Private Bank was the worst performer, falling 1.8%. IT and FMCG indices declined 1.3-1.4%. PSU Bank was the only sector to close higher, gaining 2.5% on strong Q2 results [citation:15].
PRIVATE BANKS, IT WORST HIT; PSU BANKS BUCK THE TREND ON STRONG Q2
The private banking sector bore the brunt of the selloff, with the Nifty Private Bank index falling 1.8%. Axis Bank crashed 4.19% after its Q2 net profit narrowly missed analysts' estimates, with higher operating expenses and weaker other income offsetting robust credit growth. ICICI Bank declined 1.15% despite reporting a better-than-expected profit [citation:1][citation:15][citation:17].
The IT sector gave back some of last week's massive gains, with the Nifty IT index declining 1.3%. Infosys fell 2.63%, LTIMindtree dropped 2.8%, and Tata Motors PV declined 3.09%. The IT index had surged 11.7% last week, its strongest weekly performance since 2008 [citation:15][citation:17].
On the positive side, PSU banks outperformed, with the Nifty PSU Bank index gaining 2.5%. Punjab National Bank surged 4.8% after reporting strong Q2 results, Union Bank of India jumped 5.3%, and SBI rose 1.15%. JSW Steel (+2.06%), ONGC (+1.35%), and L&T (+0.96%) were among the other notable gainers [citation:15][citation:17].
RUPEE SLIPS TO 94.92; VIX SURGES 5.33% AS VOLATILITY RETURNS
The Indian rupee snapped its six-session winning streak, settling 3 paise lower at 94.92 against the US dollar on Monday. The currency pared back its initial gains and came under pressure from the sharp fall in domestic equity markets and a recovery in crude oil prices [citation:3][citation:13].
India VIX, the volatility gauge, surged 5.33% to 14.77, reflecting increased uncertainty and volatility as the market reversed its recent gains [citation:2][citation:7].
FII/DII Flows: Foreign institutional investors turned net buyers on Friday, purchasing equities worth around ₹1,166 crore, after remaining net sellers for 15 consecutive sessions. However, domestic institutional investors snapped their 45-session buying streak, selling equities worth ₹3,661 crore on Friday [citation:4][citation:20].
