NIFTY RECLAIMS 23,100; SENSEX GAINS 414 POINTS AS IT STOCKS EXTEND RALLY
Indian equity benchmarks ended higher for a second consecutive session on Friday, October 16, 2026, with the Nifty 50 reclaiming the 23,100 mark and the Sensex gaining over 400 points, as a strong rally in information technology stocks lifted sentiment across the board.
The Nifty settled at 23,146.15, gaining 148.80 points or 0.65%, while the BSE Sensex ended 413.66 points, or 0.56%, higher at 74,729.27 [citation:3].
The rally followed Thursday's sharp rebound, when domestic equities benefited from value buying after a global sell-off in AI-linked stocks. Market breadth remained positive, with 26 out of 50 Nifty constituents ending in the green [citation:7].
🔑 Key Driver: Strong Q2 earnings from IT majors Tech Mahindra and Wipro, lower US Treasury yields, SEBI's decision to reverse its proposed closing-auction mechanism for derivatives settlement, and value buying after the recent sell-off triggered the rally [citation:3][citation:17].
Sector Gainers: Nifty IT was the standout performer, surging 3.9%. Media, metals, and PSU banks also gained 1-2%. FMCG, oil and gas, and pharma indices were the laggards [citation:14].
IT STOCKS LEAD RALLY FOR FOURTH DAY; MEDIA, METALS FOLLOW; FMCG LAGS
The IT sector extended its rally for the fourth consecutive session, with Nifty IT surging 3.9%. Tech Mahindra led the gainers, rising 8.48% after reporting better-than-expected September-quarter revenue supported by strong deal wins. TCS (+4.89%) and Infosys (+4.61%) followed closely [citation:7][citation:14].
Wipro shares rose nearly 6% after the IT firm's Q2 revenue beat estimates and the company signaled that delayed large deals could support growth in coming quarters. The Nifty IT index gained 11.7% over the week, its strongest weekly advance in 18 years [citation:14][citation:17].
Media and metal shares also ended higher, alongside gains in PSU banks and infrastructure stocks. Bharti Airtel and Mahindra & Mahindra were among the other notable gainers, rising around 2.7% and 2% respectively [citation:14].
On the losing side, InterGlobe Aviation fell 1.91% after the Centre told the Supreme Court it had finalised rules to regulate airfare pricing. BSE Ltd declined 1.90%, and Max Healthcare fell 1.40% [citation:7][citation:14].
RUPEE EXTENDS GAINS TO 94.92; VIX EASES TO 13.91 AS FEAR SUBSIDES
The Indian rupee strengthened for the sixth straight session, ending 7 paise higher at 94.92 against the US dollar. The currency was supported by the Reserve Bank of India's measures to curb spot dollar demand and a broadly weaker dollar [citation:5][citation:11].
India VIX, the volatility gauge, eased 0.86% to 13.91, signaling continued easing of near-term fear after the recent market recovery [citation:18].
FII/DII Flows: Foreign institutional investors net sold shares worth ₹5,285.37 crore on Thursday, extending their selling streak. However, domestic institutional investors net bought shares worth ₹3,319.39 crore, providing support. On Friday, FIIs purchased shares worth ₹1,165.92 crore, while DIIs sold equities worth ₹3,661.28 crore on a net basis [citation:6][citation:12].
