📌 STORY 01 · OIL SURGES PAST $100, MARKETS EXTEND LOSING STREAK TO 5TH DAY
🔻 Friday's Session: Indian equity benchmarks ended lower for the fifth consecutive session as Brent crude briefly surged past the $100-a-barrel mark for the first time since May, following fresh attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea and continued US-Iran hostilities.
The Nifty 50 fell 102.15 points (0.43%) to settle at 23,767.45, while the Sensex declined 331.62 points (0.43%) to close at 76,059.77. The index slipped below the 23,800 mark, extending its weekly losses to over 2.5% – its worst weekly performance in four months.
🔵 Key Drivers: The sell-off was triggered by Brent crude crossing $100 a barrel after Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi group attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. The US launched its 13th consecutive night of strikes against Iran, while Tehran continued to strike US facilities in the Gulf. On Thursday, the US announced fresh tariffs of 10-12.5% on 60 countries, including the UK and Canada, adding to global trade uncertainty.
✅ Recovery from Day's Lows: Markets staged a strong recovery from intraday lows, with the Nifty rebounding from 23,606.30 and the Sensex recovering from 75,559.59. Market breadth turned positive with 2,140 advances vs 2,035 declines on the BSE.
🏦 STORY 02 · BANKING PACK STEADY; NIFTY BANK HOLDS KEY LEVELS
The Nifty Bank index remained flat-to-slightly lower on Friday, holding around the 56,400–56,600 level, with modest support from select PSU banking stocks.
📊 Sector Performance: Nifty Media (+1.8%) was the top gainer, followed by Nifty IT (+0.8%) and Nifty PSU Bank (+0.5%). Nifty Auto (-1.10%) was the worst performer, while Nifty Metal (-0.55%), Nifty Energy (-0.57%) and Nifty Realty (-0.55%) also declined.
⚠️ Outlook: The India VIX surged 4.11% to close at 14.03, reflecting heightened near-term volatility expectations amid surging crude oil prices and escalating geopolitical tensions.
🇮🇳 STORY 03 · RUPEE RECOVERS TO 96.55 ON RBI SUPPORT
The rupee recovered 18 paise to close at 96.55 (provisional) against the US dollar on Friday, supported by likely intervention by the Reserve Bank of India.
The currency opened weaker at 96.81 and traded in a range of 96.30–96.81 before settling at 96.55. Forex traders said PSU banks were reported to have sold dollars to stabilise the rupee, preventing further depreciation amid elevated crude oil prices.
V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, said: "Rupee has been stable on Friday, trading around 96.55 to the dollar at 3.30 pm. There are reports of RBI intervention to prevent further depreciation of the rupee."
