Waaree Energies to Invest ₹8,000 Crore in Lithium-Ion Battery Gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh

Waaree Energies is set to develop a ₹8,000 crore lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh, marking a significant expansion into advanced energy storage manufacturing.

The proposed facility is expected to strengthen India’s domestic battery production capabilities and reduce dependence on imports, particularly in the fast-growing electric vehicle (EV) and renewable energy storage segments.

Strategic Expansion into Energy Storage

The gigafactory will focus on manufacturing lithium-ion cells and battery packs, positioning Waaree beyond its core solar module manufacturing business and deeper into the clean energy value chain.

Energy storage is emerging as a critical component of India’s renewable transition, especially as solar and wind installations scale up. Large-scale battery manufacturing is also aligned with the government’s push for self-reliance under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC).

Boost to Andhra Pradesh’s Clean Energy Ecosystem

The project is expected to create substantial employment opportunities and attract ancillary industries in the region. Andhra Pradesh has been positioning itself as a renewable energy manufacturing hub, and this investment further strengthens that ambition.

Sector Implications

India’s demand for lithium-ion batteries is projected to grow sharply over the next decade, driven by:

  • Rapid EV adoption

  • Grid-scale energy storage requirements

  • Rising rooftop solar installations

  • Government-backed clean mobility initiatives

Waaree’s entry into large-scale battery manufacturing signals increasing private sector confidence in India’s energy storage market.

Bigger Picture

As renewable energy penetration increases, storage infrastructure becomes essential for grid stability and peak demand management. Investments such as this gigafactory are expected to play a critical role in supporting India’s long-term decarbonisation goals.

Further project timelines, production capacity details, and commissioning schedules are awaited.
