Earnings season kicks off this week: Which sectors could shine in Q4 & how to position your portfolio?

Indian companies were doing well in the first two months of the January–March quarter — business was growing and loans were picking up. But things got complicated in March when tensions rose between the US and Iran. This has hurt the mood in the market. Big bank Bank of America now expects Indian companies to earn less profit than before. Experts say some sectors will feel more pain than others.

Q4 Earnings Season 2026 — What You Need to Know
India's biggest quarterly results are out this week. Which sectors will win or lose, and how should you position your money?
10–12%
Expected revenue growth this quarter
$120+
Brent crude price after Strait of Hormuz blockade
8.5%
BofA's revised Nifty 50 earnings forecast for FY27 (was 14%)
Which sectors will do well vs poorly?
Sectors likely to do well

Capital Goods & Industrial
Strong government orders and focus on self-reliance protect these from global shocks

Banking & NBFCs (BFSI)
Credit growing at 14%, loan margins stable — banks are in good shape

Upstream Energy & Metals
Higher global oil and metal prices directly boost domestic producers' earnings

Green Energy & Renewables
India now has 50%+ non-fossil energy capacity; stable govt policy supports growth
Sectors likely to struggle

IT Services
Western companies cutting tech spending due to war uncertainty; deal pipeline slowing

Oil Marketing Companies
Buy crude at high price but cannot raise petrol/diesel prices fast — margins squeezed

Consumer Durables & Paints
Raw materials are crude-linked; higher costs will hit profit margins hard

Chemicals, Textiles & Auto Parts
Higher input costs, rising shipping rates, and weak demand from export markets
How should you position your portfolio?
DO THIS
Focus on quality stocks
Look for large-cap companies with low debt, strong brands, and the ability to raise prices. These companies absorb shocks far better than smaller, weaker ones.
DO THIS
Increase domestic-facing exposure
Companies that sell within India are shielded from global oil and currency shocks. Banks, capital goods, and renewables fit this profile well right now.
AVOID / REDUCE
Trim high-risk export stocks
Reduce holdings in companies with high dollar debt or those unable to pass rising input costs to customers — especially in IT, chemicals, and auto components.
OPPORTUNITY
Use dips as buying chances
Earnings-related dips can be used to buy quality stocks at better prices — but only in structurally strong sectors. Do not chase every dip blindly.
